Carlitos as we call him in the lab joined in 2010, when he started with his Master degree. He worked on a project with acanthocephalans of the genus Neoechinorhynchus endoparasites of sleeper fishes from Gulf of Mexico and Pacific Ocean slopes. Carlitos amplified molecular markers and combined them with morphological characters and described new species of the genus Neoechinorhynchus. During his Master degree, Carlitos participated in several project and field trips collecting freshwater fishes and aquatic birds. In spring 2012, Carlitos defended his Master thesis and the same year he started with the PhD program.
During this time, Carlitos gained a lot of experience doing research on several projects and published several papers with parasites of freshwater fishes, his favorite group. He organized some field trips to some countries as: Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras and Costa Rica. He collected parasites of diverse groups of freshwater fishes, although him, has an extraordinary passion for the freshwater fishes of the genus Profundulus an endemic group from Middle America. In the summer 2016, Carlitos defended his Ph. D thesis with acanthocephalans of the genus Neoechinorhycnhus from Middle America. Currently, Carlitos is an independent researcher from Instituto de Ecología (INECOL A. C.) and development projects with several groups of parasites as monogeneas, acanthocephalans and digeneas.
